In this video I demonstrate some of the differences between photos taken with a phone and photos taken with a camera. I show you example photos taken with both and discuss the differences in quality, composition, exposure etc.
Taking photos with your phone is often more convenient than taking photos with your camera, that's why phone photography is more popular. But many people reach a point where they realize their phone is very limited as a camera. It's convenient and easy, but it rarely, if ever, will take a better photo than a camera can.
The key differences are that the phone has a very small sensor. That's the part that captures the image when you take a photo. The smaller the sensor, the lower the image quality. Any dslr or mirrorless camera has a much larger, higher quality sensor than any phone does.
This is not so much about megapixel count as the physical size of the digital sensor. You may have a phone with a 20 megapixel sensor and a camera with a sensor that has the same number of pixels. The quality of images the camera will capture is far higher because the physical size of the sensor is so much larger. Each pixel is many times larger and more responsive to light on the larger sized sensor.
Lens options for cameras are vast, but with a phone you have to mess around with fiddly, add on lenses that often reduce image quality even further.
You will see in the images I use in this video that a camera, even one as old as mine (it's nearly ten years old now!) will produce far better photographs than a phone can.
