The quantum beat of life
As inhabitants of the earth, we are integrated into a complex rhythmic process from the very first day of our existence. Planetary movements give us day and night, ebb and flow and the seasons, and now and again meteors flash up - signs from a world beyond our solar system. And life itself is just as rhythmic: cells vibrate, hearts beat... At first we just listen, then we start to dance along. And at some point we learn to keep our balance, to stand on our own two feet, to move on our feet.
If you follow Kassa Overall's solo, you can experience the logical continuation of this learning, how, in an evolution that is as ontological as it is private, the upright gait once again produces a quadrupedal being: the sapiens who touches the surface of the planet with all extremities, connected to its cycles, in harmony with its pulse.
The fact that this does not happen without contrasts and dramatic changes can be heard in Kassa's solo. As a virtuoso of down-to-earthness, he brings me sonic seasons. I hear glaciers calving and fruit falling from trees, but I also hear buds quietly opening, lifeblood flowing through veins and tracheas. Listen to the quantum beat of life. Overall listens to it as a four-handed earthly being, letting it resound in its full dynamics, as if the cosmos were communicating itself to the instrument via the human body. Und irgendwann lernen wir, die Balance zu halten, auf eigenen Füssen zu stehen, uns gehend fortzubewegen.
Wer Kassa Overalls Solo verfolgt, kann als logische Fortsetzung die¬ses Lernens erleben, wie in einer ebenso ontologischen wie privaten Evolution der aufrechte Gang wieder ein vierfüssiges Wesen hervor¬bringt: den Sapiens, der mit allen Extremitäten die Oberfläche des Planeten berührt, seinen Zyklen verbunden, im Einklang mit seinem Puls.
Dass dies nicht ohne Kontraste und dramatische Wechsel abgeht, ist Kassas Solo anzuhören. Als Virtuose der Bodenständigkeit beschert er mir klangliche Jahreszeiten. Ich höre Gletscher kalben und Früch¬te von Bäumen fallen, höre aber auch, wie Knospen sich leise öffnen, wie Lebenssaft durch Adern und Tracheen fliesst. Höre den Quanten¬beat des Lebens. Den belauscht Overall als vierhändiges Erdenwesen, er lässt ihn in seiner vollen Dynamik ertönen, so als teile der Kosmos sich über den menschlichen Körper dem Instrument mit. Tritt später auch noch die Stimme hinzu, ist jenes sagenhafte Schwemmland er¬reicht, wo Archaisches und die Sophistication sich zum menschlichen Ausdruck vereinen – auf dem ›fruchtbaren Halbmond‹ der modernen Schlagzeugkunst.
