What are the types of anxiety?
ANXIETY IS FUNDAMENTAL TO OUR SURVIVAL, BUT IF IT TAKES OVER OUR MINDS AND STARTS TO INTERFERE WITH DAILY ACTIVITIES, WE HAVE TO WORRY.
Before we talk about the types of anxiety, we need to remember what anxiety is. Anxiety can be defined as a feeling of insecurity, apprehension, and fear associated with excessive worry about something that hasn't yet happened—that is, a future danger—but that could occur, be out of control, and go wrong. The person has difficulty stopping worrying and relaxing. These sensations act as a "warning" that awakens the brain to situations interpreted as threatening.
And how do these anxiety disorders arise? Well, when there's a chemical imbalance in the brain, we have a small, lump-like region in our brain called the amygdala (not the amygdala in our throat). When we're faced with danger, it becomes hyperactivated and releases chemicals that communicate with other areas of the brain, triggering the body's fear response.
In anxiety disorders, these areas are highly alert, and the brain can't inhibit this. Therefore, medication treatment includes medications that increase serotonin levels in the brain, improving anxiety control.
