Progress Updating Using Activity Steps In Primavera P6 | Primavera Tutorial for Civil Engineer
We know that activity steps are simply a checklist of things that need to be done to complete the particular activities. So we'll see how we can update the progress using activity steps. So we can think of steps as a tool to support the status update process of our schedule.
Steps Give us the robust and discrete way to track the percentage of completed work on a longer duration activity for which it would be very tough to report progress accurately. So once we have steps in place, we can use them to drive the physical percent complete progress value for the activity. So we know that when we are updating the progress, the first step, we have to enter the status. Then we have to change the new data and we have to recalculate the project schedules.
So in order to drive progress using activity steps, two conditions must be fulfilled. First, the project calculation tab must have the activity percent complete based on activities steps, as in the figure you can see. Second is the % complete type for the activity must be set to physical .steps will not drive progress on units or duration % complete type remember this thing. So now we'll see how we can update the progress using activity steps on primavera software. So open primavera software now will move the project tab So now open the project on which you're working, click the calculation tab from BOTTOM LayOut. And check the box activity percent complete based on activities steps. And now we will fulfil the second condition, so go to the activity window and select the activity for which you have specified the steps as I have to the substantial completion task for which I specified a few steps for its completion. So now I'm going to the general tab I'm making the % complete type as physical and I'll move to the steps window again.
So let's open some additional steps column in the stepped tab to do this. Right-click on one of the column heads, customize the steps column and we can select all of these columns.& close So this gives us the complete range of columns to work with. Now I'm going to status and I'm going to make this task as started and I can change the start date, whatever is the actual start date for this task. And I'm going to the steps tab and I'm marking fire martial's inspection complete and also MEP final inspection complete so I can see on the status that my task has been updated at 44.44 percent.
We also have an option in case we feel MEP inspection is not a hundred percent over. We simply unmark the completion and we can specify percent completion for this step. So I can see the progress has been updated at 31.48 percent. However, to avoid complexity, it is always recommended to wait until the task step is hundred percent complete. And then we can simply mark it as complete so that we can check the status so after updating status will go to schedule and we can select the new data date For our project. so after updating my steps, I'm going to calculate my schedule, so I'm going to do this by pressing f9 or the schedule icon. I'm selecting the data date 27th of January and I'm going to schedule. So my progress has been updated on this task. So I hope it is now clear to you how easily we can use these steps to Mark our progress. So we have seen now how activity. Steps are a very powerful function in primavera p6 to provide better detail to tasks and also we can update the status of the activity. It is as simple as marking the activity as started using the status and then checking off all the steps that are hundred percent complete in the steps tab. So primavera p6 will automatically update the GANTT chart activity status bar using the information.
