When a male elephant is ready to breed
it enters a periodic condition called Musth.
Testosterone shoots up to an average of 60 times its normal levels.
In rare cases, an increase of 140 times is even observed.
This period of raging hormones lasts for months.
The sex drive is so high that it drives them crazy.
Musth males are characterized by swollen
and secreting temporal glands.
When their temporal glands enlarge,
they exert pressure on their eyes and optic nerves,
resulting in considerable discomfort.
This pain plays a significant role in the animal's
irritability and aggressive actions.
Tusk-scraping against the ground seems to alleviate
this pressure in some way.
Wild bulls in musth often produce a characteristic low,
pulsating rumbling noise known as "musth rumble",
which can be heard by other elephants for considerable distances.
This attracts females in heat and also serves as warning
for other bulls and non receptive females.
