In this talk, Carla Sharp explains the field’s shift following the publication of the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD), moving from a symptom-based view of personality pathology to a dimensional diagnostic system that includes functioning. She highlights how this shift is embodied in Criterion A—the Level of Personality Functioning (LPF)—and describes its particular importance for understanding the development of personality pathology in adolescence and for reducing stigma associated with personality disorder. Carla Sharp also discusses the translational implications of this dimensional approach, including how it informs more precise assessment and more developmentally sensitive treatment for adolescents with personality-related challenges.
