Implanon Insertion Procedure, Indications, Contraindication & Complications : OSCE & TOACS Station
An implanon is a subdermal long acting , reversible , hormonal contraceptive method containing Etonorgestrel of about 68 mg. Initial rate of release of Progesterone from Implant is 60 to 70 microgram/day and it falls gradually to 25 – 30 microgram per day. It provides Contraception for 3 years. The failure rate of an implanon is 0.05 % .
Parts of Implanon include specific Implanon Applicator along with Applicator Seal , Obturator with grooved tip , Obturator Support , Cannula needle with implanon inside , Needle Sheath and the size of Implanon is about 4 cm . Implanon works by Ovulation Suppression , increased Viscosity of Cervical Mucous and alteration in Endometrium . It can’t be used an emergency contraceptive method but it is a long acting reversible contraceptive method. This method carries lower pearl index as compared to other methods of contraception like intrauterine contraceptive devices , Combined and Progesterone only Contraceptive Pills.
The contraindications of Implanon include Pregnancy , Thromboembolic disorders , Liver disease ( tumor / active hepatitis ) , Undiagnosed Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding , Carcinoma Breast , Stroke , Diabetes and Ischemic Heart Diseases .
