In this video, Tim Warner covers the Metro User Interface in Windows Server 2012. He’ll discuss the user interface and the Windows Start Screen between Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012, then talk about the design language that it uses: Modern.
The Metro User Interface in Windows Server 2012 is technically called the Windows Start Screen. This is a bit controversial, particularly considering how Windows implemented it in Windows Server. While some systems administrators dismiss it as a “Mickey Mouse interface,” it does offer some substantial advantages. The tiles that comprise a major portion of the design are optimized for touch interfaces, which is the next step in GUI evolution. Although this seems to be more utilitarian in Windows 8 and less functional in a server environment, Microsoft implemented this with an eye towards the future and the possibility of tablet-based administration.
