CONCLUSION:
Well, it's time to wrap up this review and draw some conclusions about the sigma 35mm f/1.4 lens, it goes like this, in a nutshell;
The build quality - it's nearly perfect and a prime example of what's working at sigma, in my opinion it's built better than canons 35 L and sigma's new global vision finish to me is coach bag or Rolex watch equivalent in the world of cameradome. We gave it a 9.5/10, the only thing holding it back from a perfect score is the fact that it's not weather sealed.
Focus speed and accuracy: easily one of the most consistent sigmas I've ever used, very fast and mostly accurate, that said just a word of caution, at f/1.4 the slightest bit of movement by the photographer or the subject after the lens has captured focus can result in a slightly softer shot, a true test of the sigmas accuracy can be measured by putting the camera on a tripod and shooting a still subject, when you do, the center of the frame can be nothing short of amazingly sharp and deadly accurate. That's not to say that it won't miss a bit more often than the average lens, but it hits with sharp accuracy way more often than not, we gave it a 9/10.
Optical quality and the quality of higher results: in a word? Stellar straight out of camera and with a little bit of tweaking in Lightroom 5 and/or photoshop the quality of the results are nothing short of amazing! We gave it a 9.5/10 for optical quality and a 10/10 for the quality of the results. Just an excellent performance!
And finally value: compared to the higher end Canon and Nikon equivalents, the sigma is a shining star of value as clearly it's the higher end lenses that sigma is targeting, the lens stands well enough on its own, in fact I think you can make the case that not only is it a better lens than the canon 35L, but when you consider its half the price of the canon and nikon equivalents, it's pretty clear that the sigma is a shingling star of value in the camera world, for value, it's the easiest 10/10 I've ever awarded.
Overall, the sigma gets a 48/50 and earns the highest rating we've ever given a lens when you consider all 5 factors of our rating system, It's a job well done sigma!
The final word: if you need a 35mm lens that works really well in low light, then look no further that the sigma 35mm f/1.4, complete with its great build, great optics, fast and mostly accurate focus, the sigma would be a compelling value if it were similarly priced to the canon and nikon equivalents, the fact that it's nearly 50% less makes it a sensational value that should find its way into the bags of a lot of pros and enthusiasts alike.
