Former periodontist Charlie Adelson will be on trial October 23rd for the murder of his former brother-in-law, Dan Markel. On July 18, 2014, FSU law professor Dan Markel was shot in his garage by a hitman, Sigfredo Garcia. Garcia's companion/driver was Luis Rivera, who later made a deal and became a witness for the State. Rivera and Garcia were childhood friends. Garcia had 2 children with Katie Magbanua, and they had an on-again, off-again relationship. At the time Markel was murdered, Magbanua was dating Charlie Adelson, Markel's former brother-in-law. Sigfredo Garcia was the shooter and was sentenced to life in prison in late 2019. Magbanua was also convicted of murder in spring 2022 and sentenced to life. Wendi Adelson and her mother Donna Adelson have been named as co-conspirators by the prosecution; they have not been charged with a crime. Charlie Adelson, Wendi's brother, is in jail awaiting trial next month for his role in the murder for hire.
Roughly an hour after Markel was shot on July 18, 2014, Wendi Adelson was seen by a police officer driving up to the crime scene tape a few doors down from Markel's house and making a quick 3-point turn to leave the scene, not stopping to inquire about what had happened. She then continued driving west to an ABC liquor store and purchased Bulleit (pronounced "bullet") Rye Whiskey before heading back north to meet friends for lunch. Wendi Adelson moved away from Tallahassee three days after Dan Markel was shot, taking their 2 sons to southern Florida. She never spoke with investigators again after her 7/18/2014 meeting. At Markel's memorial service on 7/20/2014, Donna and Harvey Adelson allegedly told investigators they would speak with them the next day, but they too left Tallahassee on Monday, never speaking with them again.
