Working With ReWire - Creating Tracks
Using a technology called ReWire, you can move audio between two programs in real time. This quick tutorial shares how to use ReWire to work with two DAWs simultaneously.
In today's age of software options, we often times find ourselves wishing we had the ability to use tools or functionality from one program inside of another. ReWire makes this possible! As you can see in this lesson, you can load up another DAW (in this case Renoise) inside of Ableton Live. Ableton Live is the host program and Renoise is the slave program. This means that Ableton Live is the program that audio is flowing to and Renoise is the program that audio is flowing from.
ReWire can be used with most modern DAWs and is a wonderful way to take advantage of features that you are lacking in your program of choice. It's also a great way to collaborate with people who may not have all the same software as you. It's just one more way to make your setup as universally compatible as possible.
ReWire is a software protocol, jointly developed by Propellerhead (Reason) and Steinberg (Cubase), allowing remote control and data transfer among digital audio editing and related software. Originally appearing in the ReBirth (Propellerhead) software synthesizer in 1998, the protocol has since evolved into an industry standard. You can find many creative uses for ReWire in the studio and even in live situations. It's well worth grabbing and diving into!
