💫INDUSTRY: CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVISM 💫
Harriet Tubman — Tubman was an abolitionist responsible for the “Underground Railroad” to help free enslaved Black Americans. She was also a humanitarian and a Union spy during the American Civil War.
Claudette Colvin — Claudette actually refused to give up her seat to a white person 9 months before Parks did and she was 15 years old. So, why isn't her name mentioned as frequently as Parks' is? “My mother told me to be quiet about what I did. She told me: ‘Let Rosa be the one. White people aren’t going to bother Rosa — her skin is lighter than yours and they like her.’”
Daisy Bates — President of her local NAACP chapter in Little Rock, Arkansas and played a huge role in ending school segregation in Arkansas by organizing the Little Rock Nine.
Dorothy Height — Height was a civil rights activist who's considered the "unsung heroine" of the civil rights era. In addition to leading the National Council of Negro Women for 40 years, she helped found the National Women’s Political Caucus alongside feminist activists like Gloria Steinem. She received the Congressional Gold Medal for her work in 2004.
Ruby Bridges — at age 6 in 1960, Bridges became the first Black American student to integrate an elementary school in the South.
Coretta Scott King — The late activist and wife of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., often referred to as the First Lady of the Civil Rights Movement.
Rosa Parks — Parks was best known for her role in the Montgomery bus boycott when in 1955 she refused to give up her seat to a white person.
