One of the most serious dangers of free diving is 𝐬𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐨𝐮𝐭, a sudden loss of consciousness caused by 𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐨𝐱𝐲𝐠𝐞𝐧 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐬 (𝐡𝐲𝐩𝐨𝐱𝐢𝐚) near the end of a breath-hold dive. It often happens 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠, especially during ascent, and is made more likely by 𝐡𝐲𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐝, which delays your body’s natural urge to breathe.

🧠 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐭 𝐬𝐨 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐬?
• You feel calm—until your brain runs out of oxygen
• There's no urge to breathe, so 𝐛𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲
• Without a buddy watching, it can quickly lead to drowning—even in experienced divers

And it’s not the only risk:

⚠️ 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐝𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐞:
• 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐞𝐬 from deep or rapid ascents
• 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐦𝐚 from pressure changes
• 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐜 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 in extreme hypoxia or hypercapnia (high CO₂)
• 𝐌𝐮𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐰𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 from repeated breath-holding
• 𝐒𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐜 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭 in unfit or fatigued divers

✅ 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐥𝐥:
• Never dive alone
• Avoid hyperventilating
• Rest between dives
• Stick to depth limits
• Get trained and follow safety protocols
