Valladolid is the capital of the province of Valladolid and the autonomous community of Castile and León. It is located in northwestern Spain, approximately 200 km from Madrid (a distance covered in about an hour by high-speed train). Valladolid has a population of 300,000, and with the surrounding suburbs, approximately 400,000. In the Middle Ages, it was the seat of the Castilian court. Carlos I made Valladolid the political capital, and then, from 1601 to 1606, Valladolid served as the capital of the Spanish Empire, until Madrid became the capital.
