The series takes place in a world where superheroes are owned by Vought International and are effectively media assets. Their public image is perfect, but behind the scenes, brutality, corruption, and abuse of power lurk.
The main characters are a group called "The Boys," who wage an underground war against supers. Their main adversary is Homelander, the charismatic but highly unstable leader of "The Seven," who embodies absolute power without control.
The first season premiered on July 26, 2019. Before the second season premiered, the series was renewed for a third season, which premiered on June 3, 2022. In June 2022, a fourth season renewal was announced. The fourth season premiered on June 13, 2024. In May 2024, the series was renewed for a fifth and final season. The series received critical acclaim for its writing, story, humor, and performances, particularly those of Urban and Starr. Two spin-offs were ordered in September 2020 and December 2021. The first of these, the animated anthology series The Boys: Out of Control, premiered on March 4, 2022, and Generation V was released in 2023.
