2019 MacBook Pro T2 Firmware Corruption Data Recovery Case Study
This video covers a 2019 MacBook Pro T2 firmware corruption case study filmed in Payam Data Recovery’s Sydney lab.
The MacBook suddenly stopped powering on, leaving the customer locked out of important files. A data recovery engineer found extensive dust buildup under the logic board. Using a multimeter, he located a capacitor that had short-circuited, and the system was only receiving about 5 volts instead of the required 20 volts. After replacing the capacitor, power was restored, but the MacBook was still stuck in recovery mode.
The next issue was T2 firmware corruption caused by the unexpected shutdown. The T2 chip is involved in secure boot, storage encryption, and device management. Using specialised revival techniques, the engineer restored the T2 firmware and brought the Mac back to life. The final step was cloning the data to a new external drive.
