In this video, we explain that a determinant is a real number associated with a square matrix. We mention a brief list of applications of determinants. We show you how to calculate the determinant of a 1x1 matrix, 2x2 matrix, 3x3 matrix and so on. A discussion is included of how to choose a row or column to expand when finding the determinant of a larger matrix. Last, we show why the determinant of an identity matrix is always equal to 1, no matter what its size.
