The Cartier Crash: Grail Worthy
The year is 1967- The Vietnam War is in full swing, the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the very first Super Bowl, Jimi Hendrix's debut album, Are You Experienced, is released in the United States, and the Cartier crash hits the market.
Considered by many to be Cartier's mythical unicorn, arguably no watch has inspired as much mystery, intrigue, and admiration. If Cartier is regarded as the master of watch design, the Crash is Cartier's masterwork. One of the most collectible watches on the planet, it exudes an aura of legend and lore unlike any other.
Rumored to have taken inspiration from the works of surrealist artist Salvador Dali, or perhaps from a misshapen Cartier Maxi Oval, damaged by impact and melted by fire in a car crash, collectors fantasized about the origin story of the incredible watch, weaving intricate tales to explain the watch's quiet launch in 1967. The true origin story of the Crash is far less fantastical. Conceived by brilliant design icon Rupert Emerson with Jean-Jacques Cartier, the Crash was built to satisfy the request of famous actor and dedicated Cartier client Stuart Granger, who demanded a watch unlike anything the market had ever seen before. In many respects, the Crash metaphorically embodied the non-conformist, rebellious nature of the screaming 60s, paying tribute to the culture and spirit of this significant era in world history.
Originally sold for just $1,000 in London, the striking Cartier Crash made waves not only for its shape, but for its progressive size as well. Measuring a substantial 43 millimeters in total length, the Crash had more presence than most Cartier watches, and certainly a bolder stature than the dress watches of the era. The case was pinched at the extremities and kinked at the center, forming the off-balance, asymmetric, beautiful shape for which the Crash is immediately recognized. The case itself was finished and shaped by hand, no mold was used to form its contours. The dial of the original models was each hand-painted, making each piece a unique one-of-one commission. Thus, each Crash was the byproduct of over 100 hours of work by artisan and watchmaker, resulting in the most unique, rare handcraft imaginable for the lover of jewelry and watchmaking. Cartier produced only a few dozen examples during its initial production period.
As time has gone by, an interest for the whimsical, lustrous splendor of the model has surged, the Crash has become one of the most desirable watches on the market. With only a tiny production to support the mushrooming demand, the once $1,000 Cartier quirk began to trade in excess of $1 million. Collectors fell in love with its unique design, the myth and mystery, its rarity and history. And in an era of mass production, the allure of a unique, designed-forward icon from the most respected high-jewelry house in the world had unparalleled and ever snowballing appeal.
In 2019, Cartier introduced an extremely exclusive run of tribute models for the birthplace of the Crash, the London Boutique. Delivering no more than one per month to the most exclusive Cartier clients, the London Boutique Tributes reinvigorated the allure of the crash and became one of the most talked-about watches in the industry.
This London Boutique example, dating to 2022, comes complete with its full set of factory ephemera, including its boxes, papers, signed travel pouch and warranty card. A collector's dream, its dial, case and clasp are all in magnificent condition throughout. Powered by a manually-wound Cartier caliber 8971MC, this Crash is perhaps the ultimate dress watch. Its thick, black Roman numerals followed the contours of the misshapen case. The hands are blued in classic Cartier fashion, matching the sapphire cabochon on the crown. This piece is set with its correct 18-carat gold buckle, which features a contoured shape to match the motif of the watch overall.
All told, the Crash is easily one of the most magnificent works of watchmaking and high-jewelry, with a nearly biblical cultural significance to match. The perfect confluence of Cartier heritage and modern collector preferences, the Crash is sure to remain a crown jewel in Cartier's collection for years to come.
