The main term is the first decision you make on every chart, and it's where most people go wrong before they ever open the Tabular.

In this walkthrough I go through 24 real diagnostic statements and show you exactly which word to look up in the Alphabetic Index, and why the obvious answer is usually the wrong one.

The rule is simple: the main term is the CONDITION. Not the body part. Not the adjective. Not the word that happens to come first in the sentence.

WHAT WE COVER

The four traps that catch new coders: the anatomy, the adjective, the everyday word, and the eponym

Congestive heart failure, and why it's not under Heart

Chronic kidney disease, and why it's not under Kidney

Altered mental status, the one almost nobody gets

Long-term use of insulin, and why you'll never find it under Insulin

Elevated blood pressure vs hypertension, and why the difference matters

Plus kidney stone, nosebleed, difficulty swallowing, and the translation skill nobody talks about

WHO THIS IS FOR

Anyone studying for the CCS, CCA, or CPC. Anyone working through ICD-10-CM for the first time. And anyone who has ever spent twenty minutes in the wrong part of the Index.
