Jumping spiders are among the most recognizable spiders in online images. Their enormous eyes can sometimes make them seem cute, even to those who fear all other arachnids. These brilliant, expressive eyes are hypnotically captivating. But few have seen them in person, even though they could, as jumping spiders are widespread throughout the world and can be found in any city park, any garden plot, or any even slightly green area where suitable prey is available.
The fact is that most of our local jumping spiders are only a few millimeters in size. And, even globally, the largest species barely reach two and a half centimeters. This helps them avoid being seen unnecessarily. Nevertheless, jumping spiders are the most numerous spider group, with over six thousand species, and approximately 13 percent of all known spiders in the world.
