Morse versus Lusternik-Schnirelmann
In order to honor Harvard-Yale game day and an old friend (Frank Josellis who recently passed), I talk about the battle between Morse theory and Lusternik-Schnirelmann Theory. Frank had been an expert in both fields. Both approaches to the calculus of variations or topology have merit and power. In both words, there are Arnold conjectures. In both cases, one can relate algebra (algebraic topology) with analysis (minimal number of critical points of a function on the space).
