What happens when something priceless is treated as though it can be altered, improved, or replaced?
In Galatians 1:6–10, the Apostle Paul confronts the Galatians because they were turning away from the gospel of grace and accepting a distorted message. The gospel had been given to them through Christ — and yet false teachers were persuading them that something needed to be added to what Jesus had already accomplished.
In this sermon, we explore why there is only one gospel, one Savior, and one rescue plan.
Using the extraordinary example of @"enmeldy" a one-time gene therapy for a rare genetic disorder, we consider what it means to receive something that is completely beyond our ability to provide for ourselves. If such a treatment were given to save a child's life, no one would think of modifying it, adding something to it, or substituting something else for it. In an infinitely greater way, salvation is God's work from beginning to end.
Jesus Christ gave Himself for our sins.
We cannot earn salvation.
We cannot improve salvation.
We cannot maintain salvation through our own works.
And we must not add requirements to the gospel that Christ never gave us.
Paul's warning is striking:
“Even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.” — Galatians 1:8
This message explores:
Galatians 1:6–10 and Paul's warning about a different gospel
Salvation by grace rather than works
Why adding to the gospel changes the gospel
The sufficiency and completeness of Christ's work on the cross
False teaching and how counterfeit gospels can appear convincing
Why Christians need to know the gospel accurately
The difference between obedience because we are saved and obedience in order to be saved
Our identity as servants of Christ rather than slaves to sin
Finding confidence in Christ when we fail and struggle with sin
Why our acceptance before God rests on Christ's work rather than our performance
Holding firmly to the true gospel while speaking with gentleness and respect
The Christian life is not about earning what Christ has already accomplished. "Jesus saves. We receive." Everything that follows is the life of someone who has already been rescued by grace.
If you've ever struggled with guilt, performance, legalism, false teaching, or wondering whether you've done enough to be accepted by God, this passage offers a radically important reminder: Christ gave Himself for our sins, and His work is sufficient.
