Synopsis: World War II. Paris. Jean Gilbert (the pseudonym of Leopold Trepper (1904-1982)) is the head of a large trading company with branches throughout Europe. He is Intelligence Officer No. 1, the organizer and leader of the Soviet intelligence network in Western Europe during World War II, known as the "Red Orchestra." Leopold Trepper's unofficial title of "Intelligence Officer No. 1" is recognized by all intelligence agencies worldwide. The spy network he created is still considered the most effective, and its entire history is a ready-made movie script, with numerous radio operators actually calling themselves "pianists" and their boss "Kapellmeister." Gestapo records dubbed the network the "Red Orchestra." Of the 1,500 radiograms transmitted, the Nazis managed to intercept only 200. The intelligence obtained in the Soviet Union from Leopold Trepper influenced the outcome of key battles, including the Battle of Stalingrad.
German detective Karl Giering refuses to admit that the man he's been searching for for years is his neighbor. Gilbert and Giering are not only neighbors; they're even friends, walking their dogs together on the banks of the Seine. Giering is terminally ill. Doctors gave him six months to live. He's been alive for three years now, and he understands perfectly well that he's only alive because the "Kapellmeister" hasn't yet been caught...
