How to design Dropdowns? | UX Design Tips

There are times when we would ask our users some questions. We ask for information, things like their date of birth or category of their issue. Or we would simply want to know where they would like to be directed. Those choices bring out an important element often used in UX design. The dropdown menu. Designing the dropdowns is both an easy and difficult thing to do, and here are some tips I‘d like to share with you on how to design a more user-friendly dropdown.

The first is the use of typing. It happens a lot when we have to include a ton of items in our dropdowns. Be sure to allow them to type so they can find what they need, as it’s way easier and faster to do.

The second is to always keep the previous layer of selection on the screen for users. When using a mega menu, you need to display the previous information hierarchy because users need to “recognize rather than recall”. Check out my previous videos for more info.

Lastly, grey out the options that are unavailable for the dropdown rather than removing them for a “CLEANER” interface. You could also use a question mark right next to those items for the explanation.

I hope these tips will help your team design better dropdowns.

I hope this was helpful.
