Who were the Kamikaze?
Once it became clear to Japan could not win the war through traditional means, the Japanese military leaders started to take extreme measures to stop the American advance in the Pacific.
The Kamikaze program began in October 1944, directing pilots to crash their planes into enemy ships intentionally.
They believed that if they could sink enough American boats, the U.S. would be forced to negotiate peace.
