I hadn't been able to shoot any video for a month due to the lack of fish in Fethiye Bay. This had begun to seriously dent my motivation. But this hunt offered me a new glimmer of hope. My friend Salih, who has been fishing in the Fethiye region for years, accompanied me on this hunt. His lack of decent fishing for a month had soured his mood and he was worried we might come up empty-handed. Luckily, luck was on our side, and it was a night teeming with barracuda!
First, we fished behind the boat with a dummy. Salih caught a shad on his hook, but it slipped away just as he was being pulled back to the boat. We didn't catch any more shad, but big surprises awaited us that night.
We anchored in the 40-meter-deep area where we would be fishing and prepared a delicious dinner. Then, we released our line and started fishing for bait. We caught a few shad, but the shad refused to be caught on our line tonight. I still managed to catch a barracuda using a jig. A second barracuda arrived shortly afterward with a live shad. Salih then caught another one with a live sardine. When we ran out of shad, Salih started casting with a lure and caught a barracuda on his first cast! We caught eight barracuda throughout the night. We also caught a puffer and a large, predatory bottom-dwelling fish, but it fled before I could get it to the boat.
When the morning sun rose, we went back out fishing. However, since we couldn't catch any baitfish, he had to try a jig. Unfortunately, we were unlucky that morning and caught no fish. It was still a very enjoyable day.
