When you make encoding decisions that affect bitrate distribution, you need to see what's actually happening inside the file. Bitrate Viewer was the go-to tool for years, but it stops at H.264 and forces you to open separate windows for each file you compare.

This walkthrough shows how SLC Bitrate Explorer handles the same job for AVC, HEVC, VP9, and AV1, with all files compared in a single window. Using three encodes of the same source (CBR at 8500 kbps, capped CRF 22 with an 8 Mbps max, and VBR targeting 8 Mbps with a 4x max), the video covers reading the bitrate chart in second-based and frame-based views, spotting the risk of a 24 Mbps VBR peak on mobile delivery, and deciding whether the extra bitrate is actually buying visible quality.

The video also covers the integrated frame viewer with real-time playback, VMAF, PSNR, and SSIM metric calculation, the File Compare tab for MediaInfo-style side-by-side analysis with deltas-only filtering, and the Frame Type view for verifying I, P, and B frame placement for ABR packaging.

SLC Bitrate Explorer runs on Mac (Intel and Apple Silicon) and Windows. The 14-day trial unlocks all features. After the trial, file intelligence, file compare, the bitrate chart, and frame type analysis remain active.
