Automate every financial decision for your business and personal life with Sequence in under 10 minutes.

In this step-by-step walkthrough, Nick Cisler, a financial automation expert from Sequence, builds a complete money automation system from scratch for Sarah and David, a couple who runs a business while Sarah also holds a traditional job. The whole setup starts with dedicated sub-accounts called Income Sources in Sequence, which are real bank accounts with routing and account numbers powered by Thread Bank, an FDIC-insured bank based in Nashville, Tennessee. From there, existing accounts like personal checking, savings, investments, and debt accounts are all connected in seconds using Plaid, Finicity, and other secure integrations.

Once the accounts are linked, Nick creates sub-accounts called Pods in Sequence, each one purpose-built for a specific financial goal. On the business side that means tax reserves, profit, owner pay, operating expenses, and investing. On the personal side it covers things like debt payoff, vacation savings, and an emergency fund. Every Pod is a real account with its own virtual and physical debit card. Then the automation rules, called Sequence Rules, kick in. The moment business income lands, 30% is automatically routed to the tax account. On the first of the month, 10% of remaining funds goes to profit, $7,000 covers business expenses, $5,000 goes to owner pay, and everything left flows into the investment account.

The automation doesn't stop at the top level. Each sub-account has its own rules that keep money moving. The investment account automatically sends $2,000 per month to a 401k (capped at the annual limit of $23,500) and $600 per month to an IRA (capped at $7,000 annually). You can explore the full map of this system at the link below and copy it directly into your own Sequence account.
