First Man In Space - How the USSR Chose Him?
On April 12, 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first man in world history to enter outer space. Every kid in the world knows his name. But not everyone knows how and why exactly Yuri became the first Cosmonaut of the Soviet Union. Was he some kind of a secret KGB agent? Did he have superpowers? Was he trained by Tibetan monks? Today I'll try to answer those questions

In May 1958, Sergei Pavlovich Korolev reviewed the proposals of the design department headed by Mikhail K. Tikhonravov to create a heavy satellite for human space flight. In June, S.P. Korolev together with M.K. Tikhonravov drafted a note to the government about these promising works. In November 1959 the council of chief designers adopted the decision to begin developing a human satellite. In early 1959, the selection of cosmonauts was organizationally formalized. On January 5, 1959 came out a decree of the CPSU CC and USSR Council of Ministers ¹22-10SS "On medical selection of cosmonaut candidates", and on May 22, 1959 appeared a resolution of the CPSU CC and USSR Council of Ministers ¹ 569-264 "On human training for space flight".
Selection criteria: age up to 30 years old, height not more than 170 cm, weight - up to 70 kg, excellent health.The first group of Soviet cosmonauts was formed in February-April 1960. The official name was 1960 Air Force Group No. 1. On March 7, 1960, twelve people were enrolled in the first group of cosmonauts: Ivan Anikeev, Valery Bykovsky, Boris Volynov, Yuri Gagarin, Viktor Gorbatko, Vladimir Komarov, Alexei Leonov, Grigory Nelyubov, Andriyan Nikolayev, Pavel Popovich, German Titov and Georgy Shonin.
Later enlisted were: Evgeny Khrunov, Dmitry Zaikin, Valentin Filatiev, Pavel Belyaev, Mars Rafikov, Valentin Bondarenko, Valentin Varlamov and Anatoly Kartashov.
