The sandglass is an antique old fashion timing device, usually known as hourglass or sand timer, it is a physical timepiece that used for measuring certain amount of time. consists of two glass balls and a narrow connecting pipe.filled with natural sand.i guess many of you are curious about how the hourglass are made out? how a glass pipe transform into a sandglass?this video gonna show your what is happened during the processing.
There are 7 major steps to make a hourglass:
1. Pipe cutting---you need to cut the glass pipe into certain length to match the hourglass size you are about to make.
2. Pipe stretching and extending---to get a rough prototype of the hourglass
3. Connection throughout pipe---this pipe is prepared for sand fall through from the top to the bottom.
4. Mouth blown shaping---the puffy belly of the hourglass actually made with a graphite ingot mold, all by mouth blown.meanwhile, you can custom different shape and dimensions for the hourglass.
5. Bottom sealing---you have to seal on side of the shaped hourglass, this step are prepared to fill in sand.
6. Sand sifting and filling in---In nowadays,we rarely use natural sand(mainly because the sand beads sizes are not evenly),we use glass beads, but the sifting still necessary to make sure the beads size deviation in certain range.so the sand falling is smooth.the steps including filling in glass bead from the unsealed side.
7. Top sealing---seal the other ends of the hourglass.
