For the nine-year-old Tsarevich Nikolai Alexandrovich, the eldest son of Alexander II, who died in 1865, a small two-masted boat "Uvalen" was built in 1862 in the Kronstadt boat workshop. The sketches of the vessel, which belonged to the type of pilot boats and had a deck length of only 42 feet (12.8 m), were presented by the prefect of the French port of Lorient. The boat was built under the supervision of Vice Admiral I.I. von Shants. In addition to Nikolai Alexandrovich, the Grand Dukes Alexander Alexandrovich and Alexei Alexandrovich entered the Gulf of Finland on the "Uvaln". From 1867 to 1878, the bot was part of a practical squadron of the Baltic Fleet.
