In today's video, I give you a quick start guide on how to decide what mountainbike to buy in 2026. This video was made to be easy to digest, and to just give you a quick base of knowledge that you can use to start doing research on what mountainbike to buy. This guide works for both new and used mountain bikes. Below will be a breakdown of what I talked about in this video, as well as some links to resources you can use to also do some research with. If you have any questions on what mountain bike to buy and where to start when buying a mountain bike, let me know! I will be happy to help. None of the links down below are affiliate in any way. This is all just helpful information.

Step 1) Decide what type of mountainbike you need, based on the type of riding you are going to be doing, and the type of trails you are going to take the bike on. You can choose between hardtail, Cross Country, Trail bikes, All mountain bikes, Enduro bikes, Downhill bikes, and even E bikes or Dirt jumper bikes. Here is a great article by Jenson Usa that can help break down the types further. They are also a great resource to look at great deals to buy bikes:

Step 2) Once you decide your type of bike, figure out your top budget, and start looking into tons of mountain bike brands, and see what their cost is for that model of bike. Also use google shopping to look at places that may be selling these bikes for a sale. Look up all sorts of brands like Trek, Giant Bicycles, Cannondale, Canyon, Marin, GT Bikes, Specialized bikes, Haro bikes, RockyMountain bikes, Commencal bikes, Yeti bikes, Santa Cruz bikes, and the list goes on and on.

Step 3) Once you have looked into a bunch of brands, and eliminated some based on your budget, look at the different spec levels of the bikes, what components they come with, and compare it to the used market. Check facebook marketplace and Pinkbike.com to see what the used mountain bike marketplace looks like, and do some cost/benefit analysis to determine if buying a preowned mountainbike would be a good idea.

Step 4) Look up some local bike shops that are authorized dealers of some of the mountain bike brands you are interested in, and get a feel for size, how the bike rides, the bike shops cost, and what might be best for you. Don't buy a bike right away, lots and lots of research is always a good idea when looking into buying a new mountain bike.

BONUS) Use youtube and channels such as loam wolf, pinkbike, and others who do roundups and test many of the same style of mountainbikes from different brands against each other. This gives a great idea as to what might be right for you!
