Static Route

Static route is a manual entry in a router for adding route entry.

Static route has its different parameters.

Cisco Command
ip route "destination network" "subnet mask of destination network" "next-Hop" "administrative distance"

Parameters
1. Destination Prefix
2. Subnet Mask of Destination Prefix
3. Next-Hop
4. Administrative Distance

Destination Prefix
The destination network for which a entry is added in routing table

Subnet Mask of Destination Prefix
This is the subnet mask of destination network which is added in routing table

Next-Hop
This is an interface of same router on which we are adding the static route. This this output interface directed towards destination network.

This is an IP address of directly connected routers interface towards which traffic of that destination network is going to forward.

Administrative Distance
This is the value from 0 to 255. And if a router runs multiple routing protocol then this parameter decides the priority of the route.

Remember
― Static route is always preferred over dynamic routing protocol
― Static route AD value is vendor specific. Cisco-1, Juniper-5, Fortinet-10, Huawei-60
― Static value entry is always in routing table until unless we manually delete the static route.
― Static route will be added into routing table only if next-hop is reachable.

What is meant by next-hop is reachable
This means that next-hop either pingable or its route entry must be available in routing table.
