On July 30, 1943, 186 U.S. Army Air Forces B-17 bombers attacked Kassel, including the "Tondelayo" bomber. During the return flight, the plane was repeatedly hit by German fighter gunfire. However, an anonymous hero saved the plane, who was shot with 11 projectiles in fuel tank, which did not have an explosive charge.
The shells were empty except for one that contained a message in Czech, written by a Czech prisoner recruited by the Germans as a slave laborer. The message, written in Czech, said "This is all we can do for you now." The identity of the prisoner remains a mystery.
