1) Managing platform updates with Maintenance Control
With maintenance control, you can:
Batch updates into one update package.
Wait up to 35 days to apply updates.
Automate platform updates by configuring a maintenance schedule.
Maintenance configurations work across subscriptions and resource groups.

2) Azure Automanage for machine best practices
Intelligently onboards virtual machines to select best practices Azure services. There are two best practice configuration profiles currently available.
Dev/Test profile is designed for Dev/Test machines.
Production profile is for production.

Microsoft Antimalware
Update Management
Change Tracking & Inventory

3) SQL Server registries
Using the SQL Server registry service to receive Extended Security Updates for SQL Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2.
You have the option to sign-up for an Extended Security Update (ESU) subscription for your servers and remain protected for up to three years, until you are ready to upgrade to a newer version of SQL Server or migrate to Azure SQL Database.
This subscription is available in two ways:
Can be purchased for your on-premises or hosted environment servers.
Free and enabled by default when migrating on-premises servers to Azure Virtual Machines. You can then use the SQL Server registry service in the Azure portal to register your end-of-support SQL Server instance and download updates when they are made available.
