171,705 Victims in 44 Days: How the USSR Wiped Out Koreans from the Far East
In September-October 1937, the Soviet Union carried out its first mass deportation based on ethnicity: 171,705 Koreans were forcibly deported from the Far East to Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan over 44 days.
The official reason was to prevent Japanese espionage. The real reason was Stalin's paranoid border cleansing. Thousands died from hunger, cold, and disease.
This deportation became a rehearsal for subsequent ethnic cleansing, which resulted in the deaths of over 3 million people. The truth was hidden for 52 years.
