Chapter 19
19:1 Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through the town.
19:2 A man named Zacchaeus, a chief tax collector and a wealthy man,
19:3 wanted to see who Jesus was, but he was unable to do so because of the crowd, since he was a short man.
19:4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because Jesus was going to pass that way.
19:5 When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and saw him and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today.”
19:6 So he came down at once and received him joyfully.
19:7 When they saw this, they all grumbled, saying, “He has gone to be the guest of a sinner.” 19:8 Then Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”
19:9 Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham.
19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
19:11 While they were hearing this, Jesus went on to tell them a parable, because he was near Jerusalem and they thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear at once.
19:12 He said: “A nobleman went to a distant country to receive for himself a kingdom and then to return.
19:13 Calling ten of his servants, he gave them ten minas and said to them, ‘Put this money to work until I come back.’” 19:14 But his fellow citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, “We do not want this man to reign over us.”
19:15 Now it happened that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he commanded to be summoned to him those servants to whom he had given the money, to find out what each one had gained by trading.
19:16 The first came and said, “Master, your mina has earned ten minas.”
19:17 He said to him, “Well done, good servant! Because you have been faithful in a very little, you shall have authority over ten cities.”
19:18 Another came and said, “Master, your mina has earned five minas.”
19:19 He said to him also, “You also shall be over five cities.”
19:20 Another came and said, “Master, here is your mina, which I have kept wrapped in a handkerchief; 19:21 For I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man, taking what you did not deposit and reaping what you did not sow.
19:22 Then he said to him, “You wicked servant! I will judge you by your own words. You knew, did you, that I was a harsh man, taking what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow?
19:23 Why then did you not put my money in the bank, so that when I returned I could have received it back with interest?”
19:24 Then he said to those standing by, “Take the mina from him and give it to the one who has ten minas.”
19:25 They said to him, “Master, he has ten minas.”
19:26 “I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given; but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away.” 19:27 And also those enemies of mine who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here, and behead them before me.
