~~~
Dear daughter of mine,
It feels like I've known you for 10 lifetimes already.
Every smile of yours, every slow blink,
all the songs you sing, like dawn birds
make me remember.
Summer mornings, back in Aurora, childhood.
Backyard snow days, swing set, and the
honeysuckle seed I planted and watered,
that turned out more like a tree than a bush.
Opening my window and watching breeze move the curtains,
hoping these feelings that tomorrow could be better than today
never go away, but they do disappear
right? like fog on glass, like breath on mirrors,
getting older means losing light.
Before you, before your mother,
the color and shapes of my world had faded
into greys and lines, but you gave that back to me,
all the smells of fresh rain on asphalt and tennis courts.
Sunny hearts and warm sheets.
Pride is seeing you in my grandfather's hands, my grandmother's arms,
who both went through war to meet you, little girl.
My evening tide, even after the sun has set,
I still see you.
The long car ride and you're still happy you.
The 11am and you're still sleeping with a grin on your face, you.
Sometimes we are blind to the value of a memory
until it becomes too distant to reach out to,
like when you're 10,000 days old don't forget to call home.
I'll hold onto these moments like you hold onto us for dear life, for now.
Ah, and when you start to crawl... You’ll be grown before that tree is tall.
