Opposition activist Viktor Shenderovich and others gathered in front of the Belarussian Embassy on Maroseika Ulitsa to protest the imprisonment of Andrei Sannikov, one of President Alexander Lukashenko's main political opponents, who was sentenced to five years in jail after being convicted of helping to organize a Dec. 19 rally against the leader's re-election. Four other presidential candidates are standing trial in Minsk for their part in a mass protest.
