Baidu has had more than 100,000 passengers use it’s automated taxis so far. It intends to ramp up to a million passengers so far, and is doing so in a 700km area around Beijing. Baidu has been aggressively expanding into AI-type business lines in recent years. Some people are watching the competition wondering who will win - Baidu or Tesla? Baidu may have the advantage of being able to gather more data, since it is likely to get government access sooner.
Plus, Baidu is also blursed with the chance to operate in a region with more “complex” traffic. In other words, if Baidu’s AI can learn how to deal with the chaotic behaviour of vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists on Chinese roads, it will be a piece of cake to drive in Western countries.
