On the surface, how you light a face can just seem like a simple way to satisfy a specific look. Upstage lighting? That could feel more "cinematic". But we can use particular lighting patterns to influence the feeling of an image beyond satisfying a surface level reading of it. By setting up a simple scene and moving the key light around the face, you might gain a better understanding of the subtle - or not so subtle - implications that lighting patterns can have on a scene. Where you place your lights can help toward creating feelings in your audience that are coherent to your film, or image's intentions.

In this instance, our own intentions for the image lined up with the loop lighting pattern.
