The ocean is one of the planet's most precious ecosystems. The theme for World Environment Day on 5 June 2023 focused on solutions to plastic pollution. We continued to address this theme and look at the challenges the production and use of plastic bring to the ocean and climate change whilst discovering hope for the future.

The good news is that we have science and solutions to tackle the problem – and a lot is already happening. We met the first person in the world to have detected patches of ocean plastics using satellites and how they teach students how to use satellite data for many applications. Satellites really do protect the planet! We heard from leading scientific ecosystem experts on the stress plastics bring to the ocean but whose research will help find answers, exciting winners of the £1m Earthshot Prize already providing award-winning solutions and live Q&A with all.

For the second year running, we visited Boaty McBoatface and the team to hear about their most recent research adventures around the UK coast.

Featuring: Dr Lauren Bierman, Marine Remote Sensing Scientist and Dr Dan Clewley; Matt Kingsland, Senior Robotic Systems Engineer at the National Oceanography Centre; and Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez, Notpla.
