Giving Feedback Workshop Series: The Elusive Art of Feedback & The Challenge of Saying it Right

Feedback is an essential part of classroom work: most of the time when talking to students we give them some kind of feedback. The big question is how successful are we in supporting student learning through the kind of feedback we give, and, consequently, what factors we should consider when making decisions on feedback content and delivery. In this series of practical workshops, we will take a very close look at the whats, the whys and the hows of effective feedback to students.

In the first workshop of the series we will examine some of the stereotypes many of us have with regard to giving feedback to others. We will look at what constitutes effective feedback, and why the "sandwich" approach is increasingly coming under criticism. We will also talk about why giving feedback might be a difficult experience for both sides, and how to counteract this by following a few simple guidelines. We will analyse a few examples of feedback given by teachers to see how effective it was. We will also discuss peer feedback as a motivating and engaging alternative to teacher-led feedback.

In the second session of the series we will examine some communication styles which can help or hinder our efforts to give effective feedback. We will also continue the topic of peer feedback, and we will look at how we can involve students in constructing and applying criterion-based feedback.
This practical series will provide you with a better understanding of what constitutes effective feedback and how to choose the right communication tools to support your students in achieving their learning objectives as well as in becoming better feedback givers themselves.
