Speaker: Dr. N. Mohan Kumar (Washington University in St. Louis, USA);
Abstract: In 1963, R. Berger conjectured that for a one dimensional ring over C, if the module of derivations is torsion free then the ring, is regular. Though some cases are known, the conjecture is mostly open. We will show how a more hopeful conjecture on Hilbert scheme of points (notoriously ill-behaved) will settle Berger's conjecture. This will also give new proofs of some of the older results.
