This goes over a little bit about reference photography and how to effectively use it. In particular, this approaches it as a direct trace of an image, adding in line work, and eliminating the extra stuff that a camera lens picks up. This approach is digital, but the same results can be done with plain old pencil and paper. The software is ArtRage.
