How do you reset an escapement mechanism? You just wind it up! Well, that works for the Arnfield mechanism, but not the recoil version. For that, you need to add a freewheel, which allows the spool to spin freely in the wind-up direction. When you release the weight, the freewheel locks with the escapement wheel, allowing the two parts to function as a single part. Elegant engineering for the win!

This is similar to the mechanism in the back wheel of most bicycles- when you pedal, the freewheel locks the gears to the back tire. When you stop pedalling, the freewheel disengages allowing the back wheel to spin freely without turning the pedals!
