The MQ-3 Alcohol Gas Sensor is a Metal Oxide Semiconductor (MOS) sensor specifically designed to detect alcohol (ethanol) vapors in the air. It uses a Tin Dioxide (SnO₂) sensing element whose resistance changes when exposed to alcohol gas, producing an output voltage proportional to the alcohol concentration. The sensor operates on 5V DC and provides both Analog (AO) and Digital (DO) outputs, making it easy to interface with Arduino and other microcontrollers. With a detection range of approximately 25–500 ppm, the MQ-3 is widely used in breathalyzer devices, vehicle safety systems, industrial monitoring, and air quality applications. For accurate measurements, the sensor requires proper calibration and an initial preheating period before use.
