Indian Defense Update: High speed wind tunnel test of AMCA | DRDO’s Engine development for AMCA
AMCA is a name that needs no introduction for defence lovers. It is going to be India’s indigenously developed 5+ generation fighter jet. But what is more exciting about this fighter is the the pace with which its development is moving in the recent days and has really shocked the aviation.
In today’s video we are going to talk about two major development related to the AMCA program .
The first update is regarding the manufacturing of AMCA tunnel intake duct and 2nd update is regarding its engine.
As per recent news the Aeronautical Development Agency(ADA) had issued the tender for the development of high speed wing tunnel intake duct models of AMCA at estimated cost of under 60 lac. The Invoice for the same can be seen in the video. ADA has planned to further study and collect data on AMCA Model with divert-less supersonic inlet. The AMCA’s tunnel intake duct has went through design changes and hence this test is conducted.
The VEM technologies private limited has started work on amca 1:1 scale model which will go for the outdoor radar cross section (RCS) test measurement facility in Hyderabad, later this year.
It will help to identity the actual RCS measurement that already has been predicted by the RCS simulation software developed by the NAL.
1:1 Scale model will help to prove the measurements that the software had predicted. The 1:1 Scale model of AMCA will use radar absorbing components that have been developed for the engineering model of the aircraft.
The 1:1 scale model of amca will feature divert-less supersonic inlet intakes along with other changes that where last seen in aero India 2021.
2nd update is about the India’s indigenous engine development program for AMCA fighter jet. To better understand the engine development, Lets have a little background on AMCA program.
In 2018, India opt out of Russian 5th generation fighter jet program of su 57. The main reason was TOT involved which was not satisfactory enough. India realized that to become a real super power it has to be self reliant in defense sector.
If you closely look at the time line of AMCA project from the start that is from year 2010 when feasibility study of amca project has begun , you will find out that AMCA project has went through many hindrances and set back . The main challenge that drdo’s engineering team has to face was AMCA’s engine. The same challenge was with Tejas development program as well.
The thrust requirement of AMCA is 110-125 kn. Initially, DRDO was working on development of indigenous the Kaveri Engine k9 & k10 in 2015. But soon, they realize that the Kaveri engine was not suitable for the 5th generation aircraft due several reasons such as decayed performance at high altitude, combustion flicker , in sufficient thrust, and noise at high throttle testing.
The engine development went back to drawing board stage . DRDO was now, looking to reboot the engine development program with help from foreign partners. This time, many offers was made to DRDO from General Electric , Rolls Royce, Safran and Pratt & Whitney.
But the deal could not be struck due to intellectual property rights and transfer of technology except Rolls Royce, which agreed for govt to govt deal for developing the new engine for indigenous fighter jet . Currently DRDO and Rolls Royce is developing the frame work on under which both companies have decide to co develop and create new jet engine where India will be owning intellectual property . Both companies will share the cost and the Joint Intellectual property will allow each joint owner power to independently sell, license or otherwise, exploit the technology that they own IP without the approval of other partner.
In simple terms, DRDO will be free to use or license the copyright and create an authorized jet derivative works without the consent from Rolls-Royce. Equal Profit sharing will be distributed among the partners on sale of each jet engine .
The Rolls Royce the engine development program for AMCA is win win situation for both the partners.
