All it takes is a bite to change your relationship with meat. In the United States, there's growing attention on the Lone Star tick, recognizable by the small white spot on its back. It's associated with Alpha-Gal syndrome, an allergic reaction that, in some cases, can make red meat and other animal products problematic.

It's not a new species. The Lone Star tick has existed for centuries, but in recent years its presence appears to have expanded to new areas of North America. Several factors are believed to be contributing to this phenomenon: milder winters, longer warm seasons, changes in habitat, growing deer populations, and increased contact between humans, woodlands, and wildlife.
