This was procedure that I wrote up to helped me setup a workable FTP service so I could transfer my movies into my new Jellyfin server that resides on a Ubuntu 26.04 server. Below are the step by step procedures I did to make this happen.
** Setting up Jellyfin and configuring an FTP client (FileZilla) **
Install this service on the server itself or through terminal session:
Installing vsftpd service to Ubuntu :
sudo apt get install vsftpd
Download and install FileZilla for Windows. This is a free download and works very well.
Create a new user account in Ubuntu so that you can dedicate that account for making ftp file transfers without using the admin user.
Creating new user accounts in Ubuntu :
sudo adduser 'username'
How to see what groups are available:
Shows groups a user belongs to :
‘groups’
Add an additional group:
sudo addgroup 'groupname'
I used the groupman media-grp *
Add the new new dedicated user account you just created to the new group:
Add a user to an existing group :
sudo usermod -a -G media-grp admin
Create the subfolders underneath the mounted directory that we specified earlier. I used /mnt/data as my mount point so create new folders as subdirectories of this.
Give the group access to the directory and assign file rights to that assigned directory:
Add a group to have additional directory rights :
sudo chgrp -R media-grp /mnt/data/Movies
Assign rights:
sudo chmod -R 777 /mnt/data/Movies
